Movies

I like to watch MOVIES...
and if you know me, I also like to analyze them...sometimes too much!

Here's what I've watched lately....

The Help (2011)
I just watched this movie a few days after reading the book. I couldn't wait to see how they would make the book into a movie because I loved the book so much! Although they did stray from some of the details in the book, I thought it was put together really well. This is one of those tear jerker movies. Now that I have a kid, I am even more affected by this kind of movie. I can't believe how some of the women treated their 'help' and I was in tears at the end of the movie. It is really really good!

Montana Sky (2007)
This is a movie that is apparently based on a Norah Roberts book. I picked it up at the library and thought I'd give it a go. It was a good mix of mystery and romance. You can tell that it is a low budget movie. I'd be curious to know how it differs from the novel but I have to admit, I probably won't read the book now that I've watch this movie.

Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007)
I picked up this movie at The Beat Goes On in Waterloo! very cute! Although I was originally trying to find music/dance movies for E to enjoy I though this one we would all enjoy. The music is awesome! Not so sure I'm a big fan of the term "witch doctor" in their hit song on the movie, but I've got to admit that the chorus is genius! such a cute movie!

The Berentain Bears - Family and Friendship
I'm a mom now so I can totally justify watching movies like this :) hehe. I grew up reading the Berentain Bear books and I always loved the stories and the lessons. I have two of these DVD's at home now...getting ready for when E will enjoy them as much as me. This DVD has 6 different stories and they all have great family lessons. I very much recommend it! They are good family stories!

Tinkerbell (2008)
I'm a sucker for a good Disney movie. I absolutely LOVE the creativity and originality of this movie. If you haven't seen it, you should! I love that it is a newer Disney movie, with an original story. I think that the characters are very creative and the story is excellent. It is a story about learning to love yourself and the gifts that you have instead of coveting the skills/gifts of your friends. It is a great lesson and I really recommend this one.

 The Holiday (2006)
I would really like to see Jude Law do more 'chick flicks'! I just LOVE this movie! I love the stories, and I love the music! I'm so glad I bought it cause I've seen it so many times and I plan on watching it more! Good movie!
Date Night (2010)

Just watched this movie again today...so funny! Although it's got some dirty humour, I was laughing a lot in this one!! Good reminder that marriage takes work and it's worth working it out! Refreshing to see this message in a new movie in a society that is de-valuing marriage more and more each day! I really liked this one! :):) For all those married people out there...this is a good 'date night' movie!

   Mona Lisa Smile (2003)
I absolutely LOVE this movie! It is a great movie that has incredible character development! I love the message that is has for women and how it depicts life for many women in the 1950's. Although it is an excellent 'empowering women' film, I appreciate how it also shows that some women 'choose' to stay at home and are happy! It's a movie for women of all types and I totally recommend it! Good watch, really good watch!!!

The Invention of Lying (2010)
Wow, I did not like this movie. I thought that it had an interesting concept but I did not like all of the religious undertones or how it just made anything spiritual seem so superficial. It did have some good moral lessons (like appearances aren't everything) but overall, I do not recommend this one.

Harry Potter The Deathly Hallows Part 2(2011)
Wow, there is so much to say about this movie that I don't even know where to begin. This was an incredible and genius ending to the long and exciting Harry Potter series! It is very dark...but the story is genius! I really recommend this series...but start from the beginning! I know that it's written as children's novels but I would not let your kids read/watch this one. The first three are innocent enough but they keep getting darker and darker. I didn't like seeing the kiddos in the theatre for some of the scenes! There is so much plot excitment in this movie...I could talk about it lots...but I don't want to spoil anything so go and watch them!!

The Stepford Wives (2004)
I had a little review written about this movie...but then somehow blogger deleted it while I was editing....so I don't really feel like writing about it again. It's a little weird, but I think it's humerous...so go and watch it!

Where the Heart Is (2002)
So I realize that I am like 10 years behind on this one, but I just watched this movie for the first time this week! I didn't realize that it was such a tear jerker...or maybe just for me. Ever since I have my own child, any movie that is about having and raising a child really hits me. This movie brought me to tears and although I can't relate to all the struggles Novalee went through, I appreciate the 'realness' of this movie. I recommend it!

Disney's Peter Pan
I just scored this classic Disney at a used movie store this past week and totally enjoyed watching it again and reminiscing of my childhood days! I love the classic Disney movies and hope that E will enjoy them too once he gets a bit older. I did watch this movie with a bit of a critical eye this time around because I read through the original Peter Pan a few years ago at University. I did find it funny how Pan is the object of all the women's affection...Wendy, Mermaids, Tiger Lily, and Tinkerbell....glad that the Disney version doesn't focus too much on the sexual side like the book does! yikes.

  1. I watched Where the Heart is, bugrudgingly at first, on a girls getaway weekend years ago up at Heidi's cottage. I usually shy away from anything that looks like a chick flick, but I was really surprised with this one, and really touched by this story. I like how they showed the lives of real, working class people, what its like to be poor and alone and struggling, and I would recommend it to others, too.

  2. You have given me a great list of movies to consider here.

The only one I have seen is the "Invention of Lying" and I have to agree with your review. I thought it was going to be much funnier. I also don't appreciate the way they look at religion. Jesus Christ is my saviour & believing in him has completely changed my life.

I love, love, LOVE this blog! Can't wait to see when you post new movies.
